New features available in version 27 of SPSS Statistics released by IBM.

In Crayon we are glad to talk about the new features and capabilities introduced in the new version of IBM SPSS Statistics. This year the new version includes new statistical algorithms, enhancements to existing statistical procedures, productivity enhancements as well as changes in the offering Packaging.

Packaging: Base Edition Changes

Within Version 27, IBM has changed the Bundles for Commercial and Campus by increasing the capabilities of Base edition. Now the Bootstrapping and Data Preparation features are included in the IBM SPSS Statistics Base Edition which not only extend the statistical analysis and data management, adding more value, but also unifies the license options across Campus, Commercial & Subscription making the bundles offering more consistent. See Figure 1. with the new contents on each Bundle.

Researchers, students and advanced users can benefit of the power of Data Preparation with its specialized techniques to prepare and clean the data by identifying unusual cases, invalid cases, standardizing data formats, enriching source data, and/or removing outliers; an essential prerequisite to put the data in context in order to be useful in predictive modeling and, in addition, Bootstrapping which is a resampling technique used to estimate statistics on a population by sampling a dataset with replacement. A technique for testing model stability. By defining the numbers of bootstrap samples, you can then estimate your model on all those bootstrapped datasets having, at the end, more accurate analysis and results.

New Statistics

In regards of the new procedures, SPSS Base edition also includes: Power Analysis and Weighted Kappa

To determine a good sample size for a study/ research is always an important issue. Therefore, Power Analysis is an essential part of any research plan because it helps you in this matter. For using Power Analysis you don´t need to have opened dataset into SPSS for running one of the eleven different procedures grouped by means, proportions, correlations & regression.

Figure 2. Power Analysis in SPSS Menu

For each of these functions, you specify the sample sizes and calculate the power or for a specific power you calculate the sample sizes required.

The Weighted Kappa procedure provides options for estimating Cohen’s weighted kappa, an important generalization of the kappa statistic that measures the agreement of two ordinal subjects with identical categories. This functionality was in the past provided with the STATS WEIGHTED KAPPA.spe extension.

This year SPSS 27 introduces the following weighted versions of Cohen’s weighted kappa, which is appropriate for ordinal rating scales:

  • Linear weighting
  • Quadratic weighting
  • Confidence intervals for all kappa coefficients

Procedure Enhancements

Moving forward with the enhancements to existing statistical procedures, this new version improve the Effect size to the t-test and one-way procedures add effect size estimates and confidence intervals for the following:

  • One-sample t-tests
  • Independent sample t-tests
  • Paired sample t-tests
  • One-way analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA)
  • Custom contrasts in one-way ANOVA

The Matrix Procedure has been also enhancement for advanced users to match options available outside the MATRIX function, to simplify programming of procedures, and reduce the need to use the COMPUTE command as listed below:

  • Random variable generation functions to match options available outside MATRIX
  • Probability distribution functions to match options available outside MATRIX
  • Noncentral probability distribution functions to match options available outside MATRIX
  • Significance functions for chi-square statistic and F distributions
  • Noncentral cumulative distribution function for Beta distributions

Figure 5. Comparison of Quantile Regression Criteria dialog between versions

Under Quantile Regression analysis, which is a procedure of Advanced Statistics Module, it has been improved the Quantile Regression Criteria dialog allowing to indicate a grid of quantiles in order to make it easier. Now you can put a low value; upper value and increment value of the quantiles while in the previous version you need to put them individually.

Core System Enhancements

We have many multiples enhancements also in the Core System of SPSS application like:

·       new Look and Feel “SPSS Light” of the interface

·       Auto-Recovery feature

·       Privacy settings

·       Output Enhancements

·       Chart Builder

·       New Search options

·       Issue Reporter

·       LAW & installer enhancement

SPSS Light” in light grey interface could be revert back to any previous theme. To switch easily by navigating to Edit -> Options -> Windows -> Look and feel -> ‘SPSS Standard’.

Figure 8. Auto Recovery dialogs

Auto-Recovery is a functionality that many users were waiting for. When SPSS quits unexpectedly by the next relaunching of the application will prompt a recovery dialog to restore your data files, syntax, outputs and contents in previous instances. This function is enabled by default and displayed as green check box  in the bottom of the right-hand corner.

Figure 9. Privacy Tab from Option dialog

Privacy settings has been added into the SPSS Options for allowing you to manage the information shared between SPSS application and IBM.When opening the Options dialog now you can find a Privacy tab where you can setup the following:

  • Allow the SPSS Statistics application to share the usage and performance data with IBM.
  • Enable or disable SPSS Statistics from retrieving Welcome dialog content regarding latest news and updates.
  • Enable or disable SPSS Statistics from sending error reports to IBM.

Which those settings the application will connect to IBM through internet. In case you have any proxy or antivirus monitoring/blocking your internet connection, it could be possible that the options do not work properly.

The new release has a new default color for all chart has been change to blue theme in order to match a new standard.

The Chart Tab in the SPSS Options has been improved giving more visibility about how a chart template looks like giving examples for bar charts & scatter plot chats. In addition, now is possible to apply your templates from the Chart Appearance Tab from within the Chart builder as well, having more choice to customize your outputs files.

The ability to add APA (American Psychological Association) style table settings to the Cell Display dialog in Crosstabs and the main dialog in Frequencies. You can enable or disable each time when you run the procedure. It produces your tables according to the APA Style in your output file.

This release has as default image format the Production Ready Postscript (*.eps) but only when the ‘None (Graphics only)’ option is selected as the document type in the Export Output dialog. EPS Format can contain pixel images and vector graphics and the image quality is high despite the small file size.

Chart Editor includes more flexibility to customize your chart. The chart elements (Title, footnotes, chart, legend) move more fluid to any part of the canvas with the mouse. In addition, you can change easily the Font Size as well as resize the Chart and the Legend. You don’t need to edit the Properties Tab for resizing the Chart.

Chart Builder allows to create Bubble charts which displays categories in groups as non-hierarchical packed circles. The size of each circle (bubble) is proportional to its value.

Another good improvement into SPSS Statistics is Search Function. This is a very good feature for new users when learning to use the application, since it is able to find by keywords into the menu dialogs, help topics, case studies and syntax reference and includes links to each information listed. You can also resize the Search window as you desire.

Issue Reporter is a new functionality included in version 27 with main objective to facility to the users a way to report any issues encountered when using the application. The information entered will be sent to IBM for use in improving the product only. The Report allows you to provide a description of the behavior and includes system configuration, procedural and technical application data to help the IBM Team troubleshot the behavior.

Finally, IBM have also improved the installation process by reducing the steps in the Installation Wizard, know you will accept all the license terms at once (including SPSS Statistics license terms with Essentials for Python and Python 3 license terms). The LAW interface has been changed allowing you to add all your authorization codes at once. In the past you had the option but now is coming as default steps, avoiding misunderstandings during the license activation.

Version 27 of IBM SPSS Statistics is also in our CSCS solution. Please contact to your Crayon Account Manager for any further question.

In the next coming days, we will review the most important technical factors that you need to consider before you upgrade to a new version. Stay On!
